Having a vision for excellence and beauty - for a perfect ideal - enables us to reach higher, achieve more, and appreciate goodness. When we have experienced excellence and beauty, we want it more for both ourselves and others. Music is a great medium in which to strive for excellence and beauty, and should be encountered often, if only in a small way.

Hi Dr. Watson,
Thank you for the installment "Encounter with Excellence". I have read Teaching Music with Passion a few years ago, but had forgotten that chapter. What a great reminder! It's a productive goal to strive for that one moment each rehearsal. The sense of accomplishment, the recognition of beauty, and the perception of what makes a "quality performance" - name a director across the land who does not want that! If we add up each moment over the course of a year think of the quality of our ensembles. When you really consider this goal, it can be accomplished in so many ways at so many different points within our rehearsals. Thank you for a great reminder and let excellence lead us each day!
